In our world, the most productive use many people make of their hands is involvement with electronic keyboards. Yet at the same time there is a growing appreciation for handmade things, whether artisanal food products or hand-dyed scarves. For my current project, I visited artists and craftsmen in the Indian state of Gujarat who have been embroidering, tiedying, block printing, making copper bells, jewelry making, and weaving in the same way their ancestors did nine and ten generations ago. Focusing on their hands was my way of showing my appreciation and respect.
